China Nonferrous Mining Hong Kong Holdings Ltd. (CNMHK), a holding subsidiary of China Nonferrous Metal Mining (Group) Co., Ltd. (CNMC), recently received an award conferred by the center for studies on economic and social development of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for its outstanding contributions to community development in Haut-Katanga Province of the DRC.

The award, granted in the year marking the 13th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), represents another notable success in CNMHK's corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts and signifies a new breakthrough in the company's endeavor to pursue and facilitate higher-quality, higher-level BRI cooperation.

Since its inception, CNMHK has remained committed to the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind.

The company has undertaken a wide range of livelihood assistance projects and projects enjoying strong public support across the DRC, helping to address urgent needs, improve living conditions, and raise the quality of life for local residents.

By maintaining steady development of its operations in the DRC, CNMHK has created more than 2,000 local jobs and helped train a large number of skilled local workers in construction, smelting, equipment operation and maintenance, as well as industrial management.

A steadfast commitment to mutually beneficial, win-win cooperation

CNMHK operates in full compliance with local regulations and places strong emphasis on localized operations. It has worked closely with local partners to expand cooperation into new areas and foster fresh drivers of growth.

In collaboration with the DRC's largest state-owned enterprise, the company pioneered a shift from one-off cooperation for the processing of a single ore to a long-term partnership featuring a win-win cooperation model for ore processing.

CNMHK has successfully developed and applied innovative technologies and approaches, including low-cost pipeline layouts, a high-density semi-autogenous and ball milling process with raffinate-based slurry conditioning, and copper scrap remelting techniques.

It has also accumulated and applied business operations experience across the entire industrial chain in the DRC, encompassing such links as mining, beneficiation, smelting, and sales.

The company offers all local employees a full benefits package covering social insurance and medical care for their family members, achieving genuine win-win results for business growth and local talent development.

A development philosophy featuring green, low-carbon development

CNMHK integrates green development throughout the entire lifecycle of its BRI projects—from the selection of projects to project implementation and management.

It takes the lead in adopting environmentally friendly, low-carbon, circular, and sustainable production practices and lifestyles, makes continued efforts to contribute to the establishment of a green and low-carbon industrial system, and is committed to building safe and eco-friendly factories.

In collaboration with Chinese tech giant Huawei and China's major energy company Shenzhen Energy, CNMHK implemented a photovoltaic (PV) power generation project with an installed capacity of 8 MW and an energy storage capacity of 4 MWh. The project can cut carbon emissions by nearly 120 tonnes per year.

With its advanced technologies and reliable partnership model, the PV project has become an exemplary project in the DRC's green energy sector, offering valuable experience for other overseas enterprises working to implement environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives.

A long-standing pursuit of endeavors benefiting people's livelihoods

Guided by the goal of high-standard, people-centered and sustainable development, CNMHK has delivered a good number of "small yet smart" livelihood programs with strong overall benefits.

The company has constantly stepped up investment to improve road conditions and landscaping around its facilities in the DRC, replaced solar water pumps for nearby villages, made donations to local children with heart diseases and local youth football committees, and donated farming tools and seeds to surrounding communities on a regular basis.

In June 2024, CNMHK officially established a university-enterprise partnership with the Higher Pedagogical Institute of Lubumbashi (ISP Lubumbashi) in Lubumbashi, the DRC, offering scholarships to support local youth development.

The primary and secondary schools funded and built by CNMHK for local communities in the DRC have provided access to education for 400 school-age children.

In March 2025, a vocational training center funded and built by CNMHK's subsidiary, CNMC Huaxin Hydrometallurgy Co., Ltd., was completed and officially handed over in Likasi, the DRC.

The project marked the first time CNMHK has applied its innovative microgrid system integrating PV power generation and energy storage—initially used in the mining sector—to the education sector, ensuring 24-hour uninterrupted power supply to the training center.

This year, CNMHK plans to invest 700,000 yuan ($97,312.78) to build a medical clinic for villages near its premises, in a bid to improve access to healthcare for local residents.

CNMHK agrees with the African proverb: "a friend is someone you share the path with."

As China and Africa walk side by side along the path to modernization and a community with a shared future, CNMHK gears up to keep deepening mutually beneficial cooperation while pursuing win-win results and demonstrating a strong sense of responsibility in BRI cooperation with practical actions, so as to continue making new contributions to China-DRC friendship and cooperation.
